"Son in A and E"

About: Alexandra Hospital

I drove my son (aged 10) to A and E on Tuesday 21st May as he had been unable to pass urine for 14 hours and was in a lot of pain. He has had a series of infections and problems but nothing so severe as that morning. We were called through by a nurse within minutes. I explained that my son has Asperger's Syndrome and was very stressed and we were given a cubicle at the end of the corridor (which was quieter). Several staff members talked together about his treatment and he had an ultrasound and an examination (again, very quickly). I was asked what would make him calmer and the lights were turned down and extra blankets brought in to make him feel more secure and I was brought a drink of water. The several doctors and nurses involved talked quietly in the corridor, only sending in one professional at a time so my son was not overwhelmed. I was also pleased they sent for a urologist who said he would be put on the waiting list for a minor operation. Luckily my son's condition then improved, antibiotics and painkiller prescriptions were made up and we were able to go home. I hope someone can pass my thanks on to the staff involved. When my son returns for his operation, I will pop a thank you card in to A and E. All the staff introduced themselves and were very friendly but I am afraid I cannot remember their names as the morning passed in a bit of a blur!

Response from Alexandra Hospital

I am very pleased to hear that your sons care within the department went well. It is especially important with children and those with Asperger’s Syndrome that this is taken into account and it is reassuring to know that your treatment within our department was dealt with in a calm and reassuring manner. Thank you for your comments which will be fed back at the next staff nurse and sisters meeting. Debbie Godfrey, Sister
