"tonge tie"

About: Princess Alexandra Hospital (Harlow)

Our son was born at this hospital in may 2014. Midwife who examined our child said he had tongue tie and an operation needed. She advised NHS can do this for us but there is a waiting list and she could do this for us privately. We made a mistake by accepting this offer without getting a second opinion. She charged us £150. This is conflict of interest and we now suspect that this operation was not even necessary.

Dear Anonymous, This is a highly unusual comment as I have never known of anything similar to what you have described. Having said that there are clearly a number of issues here and we are in the process of investigating what you have described. I have escalated your concerns to the Head of Nursing and Clinical Director responsible for this area of care and would be very grateful if you could make contact so we can gather further evidence about what happened. The information on the NHS Choices website confirms that this is a valid, although relatively uncommon condition affecting 3-10% of newborns. More information is available at http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/tongue-tie/Pages/Introduction.aspx. Once again, we are taking your comments very seriously. We pride ourselves on providing excellent women's health services and accept no compromise in the quality of this service, we would therefore be very grateful for your contact and assistance. You can contact us on 01279 827084 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. We await your call.
