"NTW - NPS/EIP @ St Georges."

About: St Georges Hospital Site (Morpeth)

I self-referred to the Early Intervention in Psychosis team which is based in Ashington and not at St Georges. I don't think they have anything to do with the hospital but I was told I had Anxiety and not Psychosis and was referred to the Northumberland Psychological Wellbeing Service who conduct consultations at St Georges. With Early Intervention I liked that I did not have to go to a hospital setting which was a nice, happy, happy thing. They told me I had anxiety and that I would not have to go 'anywhere near a hospital' and that it was rare even for people with psychosis to have to go to a hospital, treatment in a community setting being more appropriate. This is ,of course, a specific approach to psychology/psychiatry. I also liked how the letters were not franked and left blank which was nice and subtle and that it was run out of a community centre and not a hospital, they even visited my house. However, upon being referred to the Northumberland Psychological Wellbeing Service I discovered that I had to go to St Georges Hospital for a consultation for a less extreme illness, not only that but it was franked Northgate Hospital. It is shocking that some services are franked with Northgate Hospital and not others. One could only conclude that anxiety is a hospital-worthy illness and psychosis isn't. I can't imagine any other possible conclusion within my grasp.

The Northumberland Psychological Wellbeing Service provides a telephone triage with the referred person to identify with them their current needs and how best that the service can help. If following triage it is agreed that a psychological intervention is appropriate this can be delivered face to face either at a GP surgery or other NTW community base. In some areas access to GP surgery space at a convenient time for the patient is not always possible. NTW has access to a range of consulting rooms in community and hospital bases. If the venue offered is not suitable for the person this can be discussed with the therapist and an alternative venue considered. The service are happy to work with those referred to agree the best way for psychological treatment to be offered. In respect of the post for this service all of our correspondence sent out to patients or professionals is sent to a centralised franking office at Northgate hospital. This is purely for franking purposes and the content of all correspondence is sealed prior to reaching the franking office to ensure that patient information is treated in a secure manner. I hope this answers the queries you have raised - thank you for taking the time to leave feedback about our services.
