"Extraordinary wait at A & E during the "Quiet..."

About: Royal Hampshire County Hospital

I arrived at A & E at 0230 following advice from 111. There were 4 patients ahead of me in the waiting area who were all seen and on their way at least 3 hours before me. 2 Ambulances were seen to pull up outside and 2 further patients were discharged including 1 of the ambulance cases. Had my triage assessment been correctly carried out, it would have been seen that a nurse would probably have been able to stop the bleeding from a dental extraction and I did not have to wait 4 hours to be seen by a doctor. From the advice given by the dental surgery, I already knew what was required but I did not have the correct swabs to plug the bleeding. This was my first visit to A & E in my lifetime and have serious doubts about the service being other than complained about on television. In future I will not hesitate to call an ambulance and take my chances on them turning up in a reasonable time.
