I am 19 years old a recently had a fall due to blocked ears and being off balance, landing on my wrist. When I arrived at A&E I was seen relatively quickly and they, without delay, sent me for an xray. Unfortunately, it showed I had badly dislocated my wrist and that it would need manipulation. Due to being Emetophobic, I was frightened that pain medication would make me sick and decided to have the manipulation without pain relief. My decision was respected and the doctor explained the procedure and a lovely healthcare support work came to hold my hand, whilst a very animated nurse stood there and distracted me. All the staff were fantastic and after hearing bad reviews and having a previous bad experience, I was terrified of coming in. I would not be frightened anymore and there has been huge improvements in the service given! The only problem was there was slight miscommunication between some staff which was quickly resolved. Unfortunately, the next day I was back and the bone has sublaxed and after a short wait in A&E was transferred to war 3B. I have to say when I arrived the staff smiled and welcomed me to the ward despite it being 1am, I couldn't fault any of them. I am still on 3B as I need surgery to fix my wrist, something which I am very frightened off. The staff have been reassuring and my surgeon I can only describe as fantastic and informative about the procedure. I felt valued and the staff were not frightened to have a joke and respect my independence. I would specially like to thank one of the healthcare support workers on the ward who I feel needs a pat on the back, she always has a smile for you, a bit of banter and a lovely caring nature. She deserves to be praised for this. Also, to another HCA who sat with me when I was panicked about the surgery, she was attentive, listened to my concerns even getting the doctor to visit me to reassure me! Surgery is tomorrow, but I feel safe knowing i'll be back on ward 3B with this brilliant team. Thank-you ward 3b!
