After a recent mountain biking accident I realised I'd fractured my collarbone. I arrived at a busy A & E. However I was seen within 40 mins at a time when all the seats were full! I was assessed quickly and then seen within 5 mins of the initial assessment. The nurse I saw was great, he was supportive and within no time I'd had an X-ray and been reassessed. He was clear with all his comments, asked me if I had any questions and explained that it was likely id need an operation. In the fracture clinic the following morning this was confirmed that I would need surgery. Again I was referred quickly to a surgeon. Within 5 days of my accident I'd been through A and E and had met a surgeon to discuss my operation. The surgeon was clear, approachable and friendly. He asked numerous times if there were any questions, explain the two procedures that were necessary and what the outcomes would be. At that meeting I was then pre-admitted and my surgery was organised for 5 days later. On the day of the surgery I was met, had the pre-op meeting with the anaesthetist where again I was treated with respect, had surgery explained and what was likely. Although I was tense and a little stressed the staff took time to make me feel relaxed and clear up any problems. When I theatre again staff took time to check I was happy, that I knew what was happening and answered any questions. After surgery I was taken to ward C30 where I can't praise staff highly enough. They were at all times caring, supportive and professional and took time to talk with me and other patients. They were able to spend time talking with us and at all time made us feel comfortable. The food was great, far better than I expected and I enjoyed the regular tea and biscuits. I was in the QMC for three days and at no time did I find anything that I could complain about. As I write I am awaiting a follow up meeting with the surgeon (within 6 days of the op) and the physio has been arranged at the City hospital site as that is more convenient for me. Again I feel at the centre of my treatment, that my needs have been taken ion account.
