I took my baby son to A&E because he'd been vomiting for over a week and had lost 20% of his body weight, he hadn't kept anything down for over 24 hrs and his eyes were sunken and he was lethargic. The GP couldn't see him for another 4 days. The A&E dept was filthy, litter and mud all over the waiting area, disgusting. The nurse asked me four times why we hadn't gone to the GP instead, and scowled at me when I said we couldn't get an appointment and I was worried about him. They said because he wasn't actively vomiting he was okay... but he wasn't actively vomiting because there was nothing in his stomach to bring up. The doctor was equally dismissive, when I mentioned my sons weight loss he challenged me and asked me whether I had medical scales at home. He sent us away saying I had to encourage him to eat and drink. What a waste of a visit. It took another two days before my son could eat anything, and two months to put the weight back on. It wasn't even as though the department was busy, it was really quiet. I just felt really insulted and unwelcome, and not at all reassured.
