Recently my 20 month old child fell unwell and was sent to Rotherham hospital in respiratory distress. This was an extremely distressing experience and I can honestly say having been to Rotherham Hospital on numerous occasions my experience of a&e was an excellent one. My daughter was triaged by a great nurse within 5 minutes of arriving and sent straight to resuscitation for close monitoring. A doctor arrived within five minutes to assess her position who was excellent and was able to get a pediatric doctor down to see my daughter within ten minutes. Having been to this hospital before for the same issue I know from experience having waited 4 hours for them previously this was excellent.
The gentlemen who came down was excellent really informative and clear in a distressing situation and had us transferred up to the children's ward straight away. The lady doctor in a&e should be congratulated on her professionalism and ability to achieve things we have never seen before. On transfer to the children's ward we had a mixed experience the nursery nurse Gloria was so great and made all the family feel so welcome. She got toys for my daughter when she was confined to her bedroom and sorted her out with Peppa Pig DVDs. We were there for three days and so was she and she went out of her way for us everyday by getting our daughter toast when she was hungry. The nursing staff were generally good, apart from not realising my daughter didn't have a name tag on till an hour before she was due to be discharged.
The one real negative for my on this ward was communication. One of the clinical staff asked us to stay a night so they could trace my daughters oxygen sats but yet forgot to record it, causing us all to have to stay a further night so that it could be recorded next time. Doctors would promise to come and see us but would never appear again until we threatened to leave. We would then have to wait a whole day for medical physics to interpret her results and have to camp by the nurses desk to put them under pressure so we could go home. Overall, in our experience, we just found the doctors hard work on the children's ward as they didn't seen to communicate well on the days we were there.
