In August 2013 I had cataract surgery. I was obviously a bit nervous but all the staff were so pleasant and caring and put me at ease. The surgery was completely painless - so much so that the procedure was halfway finished before I knew that it had actually begun! On 7th February I had the other eye done. I insisted on having the same surgeon and again the procedure was completely painless. Once more the nursing staff were excellent. One incident stands out when a man came back from surgery with both eyes bandaged. The nurse held his hand while she explained to him about his aftercare. He was obviously very impressed with her caring approach and said so. My second visit was certainly more memorable than the first with the addition of the singing anaesthetist and the good humour and laughs flying around the theatre. More like the BIC than the RBH! And of course the consultant is right at the top of his game! With regard to question 2 above regarding same sex accommodation I would say that in the Day Surgery unit it is perfectly acceptable to have both men and women but in a situation where I would have to undress I do not like it and certainly not when I am in a bed and absolutely not if I had to sleep overnight.
