"Christmas Day Emergency"

My son suffered a perforated appendix. We took him to Medway A&E in the early hours of Christmas Day. A&E were slow and unhelpful and deserve their poor reputation. HOWEVER, once my son got past A&E and onto the Penguin Assessment Unit the care he received from all of the staff there, and later in Dolphin Ward, was fantastic. They could not have been more caring and professional. He had emergency surgery on Christmas Day and at the same time as keeping us informed and supporting us, they tried to give my son and his sister a Christmas day; with presents, a visit from father christmas and even fairy lights around his bed. My son wasn't really well enough to take any of this in, but his sister did and we greatly appreciated their efforts. My son is now on his way to making a full recovery and we are acutely aware that it it was not for the treatment that he received on Christmas Day, we could have lost him. We will always be grateful.

I am sorry to hear that you were left waiting for some time in A&E on Christmas Day, the department was incredibly busy over the festive period. However A&E will be ungoing a major redevelopment, starting in the coming months, which is set to improve the department. I am very pleased to hear however, that you were happy with the care you son received on the Penguin Assessment Unit and Dolphin Ward. It's wonderful that your son and daughter were still able to be in the Christmas spirit despite being in hospital, and also that you were well informed and supported at such a difficult time.
