"A & E Shambles"

About: Lister Hospital

I took my daughter this afternoon to see our GP due to reoccurring tonsillitis. She called the Ear, Nose and Throat department for advise. They insisted I take my daughter straight to A & E to see a member of their team. What followed was 4 and a half hours of waiting being firstly referred to the SAU only to get there and her bed had been given to someone else, sent back to A & E to await an examination which finally happened some 3 and a half hours later. She was examined in the corridor, and told she would need antibiotics and steroids and a line putting in. We then waited a further hour being ignored by the doctors and nurses. I asked when she would be seen on 3 occasions to which the response was "I'll look into it and let you know. Nobody did get back to us. She was not offered any pain relief and felt very unwell. All the staff were very busy but there was little or no communication during our entire visit. I did not decide to go to A & E, we were told to go. What a nightmare.

Irrespectve of how busy a department becomes, good communication with patients and their carers remains very important. We're sorry that your recent experience of the Lister's emergency department was not as we would have wished, which is why we would welcome you contacting us via generalenquiries.enh-tr@nhs.net so that we can get your concerns followed up. We hope that you allows us to do that for you and your daughter.
