Having been diagnosed early in pregnancy with placenta praevia and then finding out that my platelets were so low that major blood loss was more or less inevitable, it came as no surprise to be put on bed rest in Hawthorn ward a month before my due date. The ward was incredibly busy due to cutting back of maternity services in Whitby, Bridlington and Malton. On 2 days the ward clerk was struggling for beds and the joke was that bunk beds would be required for the mums in labour ward. At all times the nursing staff were available, kind, reassuring and helpful. I saw a member of my consultants team everyday and the anesthetist and consultant haematologist both came and discussed at length my treatment and possible outcomes.
My consultant scheduled a section for the morning of the 19th August having reassured us that he had all the team he needed plus blood and platelets. Our baby had other ideas and in the early hours of the 19th I went into labour, the inevitable happened and I haemmoraged, required an emergency section which was carried out calmly and quickly by a fantastic team who had all the relevant notes and plans.
My partner and I cannot fault the care I received during my stay in hospital. Our baby was monitored carefully and at all times we were given full information. All the staff were generous with their time despite the ward being full for the whole fortnight I was there. I met some lovely people who I am certainly most grateful to, the outcome could have been very different.
"fantastic care in scarborough maternity"
