"patient experience 2011 and 2012"

About: Kingston Hospital

I spent a total of 6 weeks on the Hardy ward, with a rare parasitic infection that was shutting down my organs one by one. The staff - from consultants to cleaners and everybody in between - were professional, kind, caring, and very very hard-working. It is very hard for the nurses when visitors turn up determined to find fault (even when I'd seen how well their loved one had been looked after). My concern is that half my bay (3 out of the 6 of us) tended to have cognitive problems to do with old age. These patients need much more of the nurses' time than patients like me, who were just very ill. Compassion takes time, which costs money and ultimately the government needs to be willing to pay this rather than just keep shouting about compassion in nursing. I have also been treated in the William Rous unit for breast cancer, and I am equally impressed with the quality of care there.
