"What is the Point!"

About: Royal Berkshire Hospital

Anything else?

Attended A&E with my Father who has Cancer, his skin is covered in boils which are popping and bleeding and need tending to daily, but have not been seen to at home visits due to a cock up at the GP he is registered with. Informed that he would not been seen for 4-hours plus, despite the pain he was in and the need to have dressings of infected wounds all over his body. Told to go to the Out of Hours service next door in the Maternity block for them to say that they were unprepared to treat him as they did not have suitable dressings and it was really just a GP service. They told us to go back home and wait for the nurse home visit which was failing to show so frequently. As far as I am concerned, and as an employee of the Trust in a clinical area, the Hospital failed him as a Cancer Patient, by not seeing him, not even examining him and claiming that they do not have suitable dressings for him which I know are just a few minutes walk away in A&E. Utter disgrace and ashamed to say I work for the Hospital!

Response from Royal Berkshire Hospital

The Trust would like to apologise for your experience of what looks like a whole system failure to your father. We are unable to respond for the GP except to say had this not failed you would not have needed to attend an Emergency Department (ED) to get dressings changed (a service which should be delivered in the community or at home). On arrival at ED we have tried to get you access to the GP services via Westcall as this should have been a much quicker option for your father (rather than waiting in a very busy ED) but sadly they also failed you. We do hope that you have now managed to get this matter sorted with your GP so that the dressings are managed at home for your father.
