"Inability to access GP surgery for an appointment "

About: West Yorkshire

(as the patient),

Due to an acute infection that couldn't be treated by a pharmacist I attempted to make an appointment with my GP.

I started ringing the surgery at 5 minute intervals from 9.00 when it opened but it was constantly engaged.

I eventually got through to a receptionist at 10.30 to be told that I would have to ring back at 13.30 if I wanted an appointment that afternoon as that was when the "computer" released the afternoon appointments.

Due to work commitments I was unable to ring back until 15. 30 to be told bluntly that there were no appointments left for that day.

If I wanted an appointment the following day I would have to try and repeat the process by ringing again from 9.00.

Once it is possible to actually see a GP they are supportive and knowledgeable however the appointment process is ridiculous apparently specifically aimed at people who are not in work due to the time commitment required to get through to the surgery.

There needs to be a better system put in place to book an appointment with the GP. It is now getting to the point where I am considering changing GP practice to one where accessing a GP is simpler.
