"problems acessing mental health services in Wirral"

About: Cheshire And Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust / Crisis resolution

(as the patient),

I arrived at the UK 4 months ago. I was fine, doing OK. At my home country I was diagnosed with Bipolar, but was under control.

Due to some problems related with work and housing, I had a crisis and became very suicidal. Ended up twice at A&E, just to be told that "I was OK" and "I just needed to solve my problems". My GP referred me to counselling. At the assessment, they said I was at high risk because of the suicidal thoughts. Then I started hearing voices. When I went to my GP, scared, he refered me to have a mental health assessment. They just told me that I was Ok, the voices were because of the stress and anxiety and that my GP should double my antidepressant dose.

He doubled the dose, I went mixed manic and depressed. Two weeks later, reduced the dose and added a mood stabiliser.

I still have the voices. I am still suicidal. I am getting worse.

When I asked him why I was not getting help from mental health team and that mood stabilisers should be given by Psychs, he told me that the Mental Health Team apparently thinks that I don't have any psychiatric condition and that I don't need their help.

If I kill myself, will they help me then?

Response from Helen Chadwick, Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) Officer, PALS, Complaints and Claims Team, Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust

Thank you for your communication with us here at the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) and also via Patient Opinion.

I am sorry that you found our services to be dismissive of your needs, however I would like to reassure you that the CWP professionals involved, to date, feel that your needs are best met within the Primary Care setting through psychological therapy.

Finally, given the difficulties that you have highlighted, I wanted to provide you with the details of potential agencies that you could approach within the voluntary sector whom could offer further support to you. I have noted the website of your local clinical commissioning group in Wirral that holds the local agencies in your area around mental health. I do hope that one or more of these services could help support you further.

If I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me on 0800 195 4462.

Kind regards.
