Having been referred for surgery I stated I was willing to attend at short notice. Last week I was offered a place the following day, which I happily accepted. Early the following morning I received a call asking if I could attend earlier that day than previously agreed. I was happy to do so. On arrival at reception I gave my name and immediately a waiting reception nurse took charge of me and within a short while I was meeting the surgeon and others. It seemed like no time at all before I was wheeled in and anaethetised. From recovery I was moved to a ward, from which I was discharged the following morning. I am full of admiration for the stress free and efficient manner in which I was dealt with. All staff and members of the team were courteous and helpful. Thank you! A particular mention of one example of "beyond the call of duty and normal tolerance" should be added. In my ward there was a difficult patient. He gave staff a hard time, as well as upsetting other patients. The nurses and other staff, however, were so tolerant and patient with him, including one nurse who so quietly and with great understanding and patience talked with him for some length of time during the night, trying to calm him. On discharge from the hospital I was talking to the man in the next bed to the difficult patient. He had found out that following a motor accident this patient developed diabetes and then had both legs amputated - that is my understanding of what I was told. Extremely sad. My admiration for the nurses and other staff in the ward where I spent less than a day is so high. A credit to their profession as well as The Royal Surrey.
