"Poor standards and questionable infection control"
About: North Tyneside General Hospital North Tyneside General Hospital North Shields NE29 8NH
My son was admitted to a&e by ambulance following a convulsion. We were shown to a small dirty assessment room in a&e, with dirty sheets on the trolley (changed by the ambulance staff) used tissues and gloves on the floor, which the nursing staff simply stepped over. The sister in the department took a fan out of a cubicle on placed it on a chair next the trolley, the dust and dirt adorning the fan was revolting - most other hospitals have banned these from an infection control perspective. Once we were seen by a very helpful female consultant we were taken to the childrens ward - on route to the ward I asked the nurse if my son was being admitted and she simply shrugged and stated she had just been told to take us to the ward before she finished her shift. On the ward we were not shown around or shown, my husband stayed overnight and was not even offered a drink of water. Next morning on the ward round the consultant had to keep going out to answer the phone and the nursing staff asked me to obtain a sample of urine - when I asked for a pad for his nappy, I was told to just take his nappy off and follow him around and catch a specimen in a universal container. When I asked what happens for infection control if he was to urinateon the floor the nurse shrugged and said, 'theres paper towels there wipe it up!' We were discharged home after he was offered a turkey burger lumpy cauliflower cheese and rice pudding for lunch. Infection control standards are poor - I would never wish to visit this hospital again!
