What could be improved

I visited the hospital yesterday evening Ward 6. My husband was admitted due to a related work injury which involved an overnight stay. I received a call at work and had to dash home for an overnight bag and prescribed medication which he takes. I am not a resident of the Macclesfield area and therefore unfamiliar with the location. On enquiring as to the whereabouts of my husband from a nurse on duty I was frostily greeted with a 'visitings over'.

I explained that I had an overnight bag for him. I was pointed in the right direction of the room. I set about emptying his bag and then cleaned him up as he was quite dirty from the injury. I also dressed him in clean clothes.

When I was leaving the hospital the same nurse glared at me and then at the clock, leaving me with no doubt that my visiting was less than welcome. I was very upset at her attitude and insensitivity. Given the fact that this was my first visit, delivering my husband's bag and hospital visiting hours unknown to me at the time.

Thank you for highlighting your experience to us. We understand that it must have been very difficult for you not knowing the Macclesfield area, and we appreciate that you must have been very worried about your husband at the time. We are very sorry that you were not informed of the hospital visiting times before you arrived, and that the nurse on duty was not as welcoming and sympathetic as you had hoped. Your comments have been passed on to the manager on Ward 6 who has discussed the matter with the member of staff concerned.

Overnight packs containing essential items such as soap, towels and toothbrushes are kept on all hospital wards for patients who are admitted in an emergency. The Trust Pharmacy holds a supply of commonly-used medication which can be accessed outside Pharmacy opening hours for patients requiring an overnight stay.

Standard visiting times are from 2pm – 4pm and 7pm – 8pm. This allows time for doctors and nurses on the ward to care for and treat the patients. This also allows for protected patient meal times from 12pm – 1pm and 5pm – 6pm.
