My mother is 99 years old.She has only been in Hospital during the last 10 having had a very healthy life and these visits have usually been with water infections or stitches after a fall. Recently she was taken to A and E from the Home where she lives. Her treatment was second to none as was in the following Acute ward. However, she was then sent to gate 43...the Elderly ward. What a difference!! When I rang for information nobody ever answered(even though I tried at what might have been quiet times.) When I visited there was never any staff around who could give any information beyond "she,s sweet isn,t she"!! The note above the bed said" mobile with 1 help".(The fact is she uses a stick for balance and to help with poor eyesight) She can trot around well in familiar surroundings. She had a hearing aid(but seemed to be lost) so she did not communicate as she does normally. Thus she would appear to be much worse than she is for her age. When I did manage to speak to a sister, she said, in flying by, that mother may need a nursing home. She already lives in a good Home which has seen to her needs adequately.I can see no reason for a change. What is the problem? Is it just lack of money; or care and dignity;or trained staff.Something needs to be done! I am very disappointed with my mother,s care on that ward.
