Admitted to pilgrim with painful abdomen, relatives all live abroad and closest like family is mine. Were told part of bowel had died, severe sepsis, prognosis 2-48hrs. One daughter took the next flight from Asia and my family went up to say our goodbyes and provide moral support for her husband. 2days after this news, she was found sat up and managed to walk to the toilet (just before which her nurse had said to me she is not a candidate for surgery) hang on a minute!! Luckily caught the consultant on his round who did not know about this info given to family, he was planning her discharge..turns out it was just severe constipation!!!!! ?? On top of this nurses did not adhere to aseptic techniques when attaching her iV meds, Disconnected her catheter which made her step in own urine and nurse in charge did not know how to contact a consultant or his team but told me to go find him myself. Embarrassed to admit I'm a staff nurse down south. Shocking!

I am so sorry for your experience and can only begin to imagine your shock in terms of different diagnosis. I note your are feeding back on behalf of a patient so I cannot get consent for further details but if she is willing perhaps she could get in touch with me directly at: jennie.negus@ulh.nhs.uk as we would be keen to look into this some more - our worry is the significant difference in diagnosis discussions and the impact this caused. Clearly there were then some poor standards of care and communication you have described and I have passed this onto the team on 5A; sister and matron will be really disappointed to read this as the standards are way below what is expected. Your feedback is important though as it enables us to build on what is going well - and importantly to focus improvements where needed.
