My five year old son was due to have a tooth removed under general anaesthetic. At his first consultation the dentist who was part of Locala was very negative and tried to tell me that my son should have the tooth removed under local anaesthetic at our local dentist even though my dentist had referred me to Locala as he believed my son was too young to cope with having a tooth removed whilst still awake which I agreed with. The decision should be my choice, I know that my son would have a fear for life of the dentists if he had only had a local anaesthetic. The dentist at Locala said in front of my son at the consultation " 1 person in 100, 000, doesn't wake up". I appreciate he has to make me of this but to say it in front of my son was inappropriate. He was very degrading and treat me like it was my fault my son needed a tooth removing. My son doesn't eat masses of sugary food but I was made to feel like a bad mother who feeds their child sweets everyday (which is not true).
On the day of the tooth abstraction my son sneakily ate 1 strawberry an hour and a half before his appointment. I am aware he should not have eaten 12 hours prior to the appointment and told him this but he is a five year old child and was obviously hungry and doesn't understand the consequences. At the appointment I told the dentist (who was the same one from the first consultation) about this and he was extremely rude to me and said I was putting my child's life at risk. I told the dentist it was only 1 strawberry but he said "This is your child's life' in a very aggressive manner. I told him my sons life was the most important thing to me but was still made to feel like a bad parent. I know my child should not have eaten and I half expected to be sent away because of this but what I did not expect was to be spoken to like I was and patronised.
