"Great service, Well Done St Peters A&E"

About: St Peter's Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

I went in with an excruciating pain in my tummy. They saw to me within 10 minutes of me arriving and I left the same morning within 2 hours of arriving. The team was very professional and did a great job making sure that the pain was dealt with immediately.

Couple of improvements:

1) I contacted the ambulance service on 999 to find out which hospital I could go to that was the nearest to my home and the ambulance person did not know this. Maybe a list of A&E centres should be available to the ambulance drivers. I had to wait about 5 whole minutes for him to find this out and eventually I told him I knew of 2 and he said I could use the one.

2) When I arrived, the reception lady did not ask me much about my illness. Whilst I understand she is not a nurse, I thought that the initial questions, like where is the pain, which side of your tummy as it could have been my appendix that if bursted when I was waiting could have been fatal. So maybe some training to identify if this is an emergency or not.

Thank you for your positive comments about our A&E team, which we will pass onto them. We are pleased to hear that you were seen and treated promptly. As you rightly say, our receptionists are not medically trained which is why they only take basic details before patients are seen by the triage nurse. It is their responsibility to assess and prioritise patients according to their condition and symptoms. Thank you again for your comments.
