"Aspergers Syndrome patient"

About: Derriford Hospital

Anything else?

Apart from the two brilliant Learning Disability nurses, staff do not understand or make any allowance for mental disability. Stonehouse and Wolf wards are understaffed, particularly at night. If you do not need frequent nursing treatment you are therefore not ill and ignored and treated as a nuisance. Doctors and particularly the consultants are the worst at showing any interest or understanding. If you are admitted needing surgical treatment and then do not get better because of medical complications then you will suffer very badly. The surgeons don't know don't care but to avoid loss of face will not allow you to be transferred to a medical team. Test that could all have been completed within two weeks were dis-organisationally spread over four months. Prescribed drugs were often late and sometimes even forgotten. Because I needed a special diet the uncaring nurses and incompetent Serco catering often resulted in me getting no food at all repeatedly for days on end. Because of lack of care and refusal to provide treatment I am now crippled with a foot ulcer and a bone infection; I was admitted by ambulance on a Thursday with a burst gangrenous appendix, I was diagnosed by a houseman in SIU as having indigestion, so they did not operate until Saturday. On Saturday there were not any Consultants working and so the operation was carried out by a trainee who made a mess of it, failing to clean out the rotten matter, insert any drains, and unnecessarily cutting a major nerve that some months later resulted in an incisional hernia. The hospital management is very poor and hides behind bureaucracy. They have taken two years to provide copies of my medical records; the legal time limit is 40 days!
