I had a gastoscopy last week to discover why I have difficulty swallowing certain foods, and lo and behold , whilst I was waiting for the results a piece of food got lodged in my gullet and I ended up in A and E as it was well and truly lodged and extremely uncomfortable. I took myself off to a packed A and E , and was seen almost immediately due to the nature of the reported problem to make sure there were no breathing/consciousness issues. After that there was only a short wait until I was taken through for treatment. The staff , particularly one nurse, were so kind and did their best to make me feel comfortable. The treatment consisted of the administration of a drug to relax my throat muscles in order for the trapped food to be able to move down. As A and E was getting quite full and I think my cubicle was needed it was decided to move me for observation to Ward 1whilst the drugs took effect. The staff there were absolutely lovely, did some routine tests and basically baby sat me until the drugs had the required effect. I cannot fault anything about the whole visit, and felt compelled to highlight the fact that in this age of slating the NHS , the staff were professional , competent , but above all else caring and kind. Having not been in hospital since I was seven having my tonsils removed , two visits in two weeks could have been pretty daunting but thanks to wonderful staff , it was a breeze. Well done guys
