My grandad, a genuinely great man, reached the end of the road at this hospital. After suffering with cancer for many years, the time had come and the pain was too much for my family to care for him at home, he had days to live and was in a tremendous amount of pain. He waited, in pain and without morphine for 6 hours (more than 10 phone calls later we called 999) for an ambulance to arrive. It was completely heartbreaking to watch him in pain and nobody seemed to care. Upon arrival he was given a state of the art room, but had no morphine on ward. The nurses were crowded around the station, completely unapproachable and anything we required would be met with a cold and often rude response. Although they got hold of some form of morphine, we waited another 24 hours before the correct one was procured. I imagine this would have been longer should we not have been persistent. I won't go through all the problems we had, it's far to upsetting and this is not the medium but we left him alone (for an hour or so only) several times to come back and find him 1) soiled, 2) covered in blood from a bad injection and the blood left all over him 3) injured after being placed incorrectly on the bed, with the bars up when on morphine (I believe it's bad practice). Each time they had found him but left him in a terrible state with no treatment or assistance. We brought this up with a nurse, and another nurse slammed through the door without knocking and said aggressively "what have you been saying about me? I'm a good nurse". The ward manager asked us "what do you want me to do?" Before walking about . It was a terrible experience , people would often talk over my grandad and discuss his death and "pathway", in a way he obviously could hear, he was clearly just another number. Again, like everything, any preference or objection was met with a cold , dismissive and often rude response. It was, by far, the worse experience of my life. There was no care, no compassion, as he passed away, our tears were drowned out by the laughing of the nurses at the station. I will never choose to have a family member pass away in an NHS hospital again.
