We’re delighted to feature a guest blog from Jacqueline Macrae who as you’ll read is hoping for some help with her research project. Jacqueline explains that the reason she’s interested in this area is that she had good friend and colleague whose mother was in hospital. Her friend witnessed her mother receiving care which she did not believe was good, and her experience of being both a nurse and a daughter was difficult. For a number of reasons she felt unable to raise her concerns.

If you feel you can help Jacqueline please get in contact with her directly. Alternatively or in addition you might like to share your experience anonymously on Patient Opinion to help us all understand and learn.

Research Study

I am currently undertaking a Clinical Doctorate (Nursing) at the University of Stirling. I am required to undertake a project as part of the course and am looking for volunteers to take part in the following study.

Using the experience of ‘nurse patients’ and ‘nurse relatives,’ as informed consumers of healthcare, to make service improvements: A qualitative study.

The aim of the study is to identify the circumstances in which it would be easier for nurses who find themselves in the role of ‘patient’ or ‘relative’ to give feedback when they have received or witnessed care or treatment which they feel could be improved.

I would like to interview Registered Nurses (living within approximately 50 miles of Lothian) who have been in hospital either as a patient, or have visited a relative in hospital, within the last 12 months and who have received or witnessed care that they feel could be improved. I would like to speak with nurses who raised concerns or complained as a result of their experience as well as those who gave no feedback.

The interview will last approximately 1 hour and can either be conducted in your home or an alternative location of your choice. All interviews will be strictly confidential.

If this is you and you would like to consider taking part please contact me for further information at:
