"Good and bad points RHCYP Edinburgh"

About: Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (Edinburgh) / Pharmacy

(as a parent/guardian),

Overall I must congratulate the fabulous NHS Team at the Royal Hospital for Children & Young People, Edinburgh - we are blessed to have such wonderful professional staff serving the UK public.

However one thing that I genuinely believe is letting the public down is the lack of communication between departments, something which we have addressed.

The other thing is the constant wait on Pharmacy (medication) when it comes to being out on weekend pass. How it could be improved I don’t know, but it definitely needs to be addressed.

I must stress that we are generally really happy with the NHS services but this lets it down on occasion and needs to be sorted.

I am sorry to hear of your frustration regarding the wait for medicines to be available when going out on a weekend pass. Due to the ongoing pressures in the NHS, often the timely steps that are required to allow medicines to be prepared for a patient to leave the hospital do not occur (I.e. prescription written by doctor in advance to allow it to be verified as correct and then to be labelled for patients in readiness for discharge). If the prescription is not available, then pharmacy team cannot label and dispense them. We aim to turn around all prescriptions for discharge within 2 hours and we routinely meet this target.

If the weekend pass is a routine occurrence with little change to medicines and doses, then there is an opportunity for ward staff to proactively plan the day before to ensure the required actions can be taken to have the medicines prepared in advance of the agreed time for the pass to begin. I suggest you discuss this with your nurse on the ward in any future incidents or request to speak to the pharmacist for the ward.

Apologies again on behalf of the service.
