"Asking for help"

About: Huntlyburn House

(as a service user),

I have been in the care of Huntlyburn mental Hospital in the Scottish Borders. I have used this service more than once but was without any service for almost 4 years. I had the worst time in my first 3-4 weeks and found everything tough. I found the staff really unhelpful and felt that there was something about my appearance. I would ask and everything was difficult in response. I also felt I was asking for help with very little back. To be fair, now I need less help, it feels better. I hope to be going home in a few weeks.  I have a great doctor and for that I am thankful. I have to move home, and very little help given. I feel stuck. I can do things for myself but have schizoaffective disorder and now on HRT, which is awful. I feel staff should know more about this topic as it affects my mood.

Dear scoreboarddxx76

I am sorry that you have found the staff within Huntlyburn ward unhelpful and that you feel that everything is difficult when you ask staff for I assume help and support. I am pleased that you have found your doctor to be helpful. Moving house can be an extremely stressful thing to do and the multidisciplinary team supporting you whilst you are in the ward can and should help you with this. I would ask that you discuss your worries and concerns with your named nurse in the first instance who should be able to advise and support you as part of discharge planning and this will include support for moving house.

I am more than happy to discuss this further with you and can be contacted on 01896 827151.
