"Children's A&E department"

About: East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust / Emergency ambulance Sheffield Children's Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a parent/guardian),

Attended A&E as advised by paramedics, couldn't get a ambulance. My daughter had an anaphylaxis episode and epi pen administered at home. The protocol then as per guidance on her action plan from Sheffield Children's is to be monitored closely at hospital. My partner had to take her up to the hospital as there was no ambulance.

Upon arriving it was very busy. Our daughter was triaged quickly. I made them aware in triage daughter is autistic and should be monitored in a side room to be told to go take her to a busy waiting room. Not good for an autistic child - their lack of empathy and training on autism needs updating. Also after over an hour of waiting, not one person monitored my daughter.

I informed the nurses I was taking her home where I stayed up all night myself to monitor her. I had a missed call 5 hours later I presume to check where we were. Shocking patient care and shocking awareness on autism.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We do hope your daughter is feeling much better now. We are very sorry to hear that we were unable to help you in what must have been a scary time for your family due to it being such a busy time and a resource not being available immediately to assist.

If you are able to, we would appreciate you sharing your comments with our Patient Experience team, with as much detail as you can (e.g. date, time and location), so that they might investigate this further for you and establish what the cause of the delay was. You may contact them via telephone on 0333 012 4216 10am-2pm weekdays (or leave a voicemail if you wish) or email emas.pals@nhs.net.

Best wishes, Sarah Connerton, Patient Experience Manager, East Midlands Ambulance Service
