"Discharge from hospital"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Rheumatology ( Wards 6a & 6b)

(as a carer),

My mother-in-law, who is 84 and has terminal cancer, was due to get discharged from Ward 6b at QE Hospital in Glasgow yesterday morning. There were only 2 staff on. My mother-in-law's condition deteriorated,  she had a high temperature and was very jaundiced. It took us ages to get help.

My mother-in-law had an accident, and my wife - who is disabled - with the help of her brother had to shower her. We were confronted by staff asking why we were giving her a shower, and had to plead for towels.  It was 10.30 pm before her medication came and we were unable to get an ambulance home. The ward manager came up and said we would be helping out if we could take her home ourselves, if that was my mother I would take her home.

We had to wrap my mother-in-law up and take her to the car park in driving rain. We got home at 12 midnight. Thank goodness she is home to spend her last days at home with appropriate care.

Dear Hunterf02

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. Please accept my sincere apologies for your mother-in-law’s experience. This is not the standard of care we strive to deliver to our patients. I have shared your feedback with my colleagues and they have asked if you can contact us with more information so that we can look into this. If you can email PatientExperience@ggc.scot.nhs.uk with your mother-in-law’s details including her date of birth.

I would be grateful if you could pass on my apologies to your mother-in-law.

Thank you

Nicole

Dear Hunterf02

Thank you for getting in touch and apologies for the delay in responding.

The Senior Charge Nurse has spoken to your Mother in Law’s next of kin to discuss the concerns you had raised. I hope the family found this helpful and reassuring.

Kind Regards

Nicole
