"Notes From A Thankful Cancer Patient"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Clinical Oncology Crosshouse Hospital / General Surgery Crosshouse Hospital / Radiotherapy

(as the patient),

Since being diagnosed with Stage 3 bowel cancer, I have been the grateful recipient of the most amazing medical care.

With deep sincerity I am so thankful to every one of you dedicated NHS people of Crosshouse Hospital who work selflessly and tirelessly, even through the difficult days of covid uncertainty and restrictions.

Since my first hospital admission, with severe anaemia, to my recent 2-year CT scan, my appointments have all been arranged and taken place to plan. I haven’t once had to chase anything up .

I underwent a Rt Hemicolectomy by laparoscopy in the capable hands of my brilliantly skillful consultant surgeon, Mr Ray.

The Enhanced Recovery Programme was excellent and I was up and about the morning after my operation and discharged 2 days later.

Subsequent pathology results revealed the need for chemotherapy and my lovely Oncologist, Lisa, explained and planned and monitored that next stage on the journey.

The specialist Colorectal nurses were there for me from the very beginning and, even now, it’s reassuring to know that they are only a phone call away if I’m in need of support or advice.

When I look back over these past couple of years I am not filled with scary, sad memories but instead I recall with joy all the different individuals who contributed to my care and the kindness shown by everyone.

Technology and medical expertise have undoubtedly been invaluable in my diagnosis, but the compassion and kindheartedness of the staff have played a huge part too.

So to all you wonderful NHS staff:

Gavin, who diagnosed my IDA and initiated diagnostic investigations

Covid testing nurses

Radiographers and X-Ray staff

Colorectal nurses, Calum and Hazel

Pre-Med Nurse ( Who reassured me by showing me her neat recent laparoscopy scar!)

Consultant Surgeon Mr Ray

Anaesthetists and Theatre staff

Bed Manager Stu

Physiotherapists

Surgical Ward staff

Oncologist Lisa and her staff

Chemotherapy nurses

Tea ladies

Cleaners

Wee Porter who wheeled me out to the car-park to be reunited with my husband

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU !!!!! x

Dear Thankful Granny,

Thank you so much for your incredibly kind words. I am so pleased to hear that your experience all throughout your journey has been such a positive one. A cancer diagnosis always brings anxiety and fear, not least during a pandemic, but it sounds like our amazing teams have really helped you through.

I will pass on your story and thanks to the individual staff and teams you mentioned, they will be delighted to know they have made a difference, that's what we all come to work to do and it is really lovely to hear.

I wish you all the very best for continued recovery and good health. Take care.

Tracy
