"Caught between a rock and a hard place"

About: Adult Specialist Services / Podiatry, Diabetes Clinic (BDGH)

(as the patient),

I am diagnosed as type 2 diabetic an have a callus or verruca on the blade of my left foot, it is extremely painful and affecting my walking. I work in heavy industry and need to climb up and down ladders, the pain is making this nearly impossible and could cause me to fall. I was referred to podiatry services by my diabetes nurse, but I have been refused treatment and told to seek care privately. None of the private podiatrists I have contacted will treat me as I am diabetic.

What can I do as I am in agony, I am caught between a rock and a hard place. I am totally disgusted as a diabetic I am constantly being told that care of my feet is paramount as I could end up having them amputated if anything goes wrong that's why pharmacists and private podiatrists will not treat me

What  am I supposed to do

Sorry to hear of your problem with accessing treatment for your painful foot.

The multidisciplinary clinic held at Bassetlaw Hospital deals with diabetic patients with active, high-risk wounds. As such, you would not qualify to be seen by this team.

There are no NHS Community Podiatry Teams that are commissioned to treat verrucae. However, if the area is a painful callus, I would suggest you ask your GP to refer you to the community service specifying a callus rather than a verruca and emphasise that the pain is restricting your mobility at work. This should enable an assessment appointment to be arranged to address your foot issues.

I hope this helps.
