"There was nothing the team could have done better"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

(as a service user),

From the moment I entered the waiting room I was professionally and kindly treated. I knew what was going on and where to wait. I was called in and three friendly members of staff (Julie, Mark and Frankee) made me feel welcome, reassured and informed from start to finish. The doctor asked me questions and genuinely listened to my responses. He provided me with a very patient centred approach and I felt as though I was being treated as an individual.

Frankie and Julie did very well at making conversation to make me feel comforted and distracted from my procedure - which was explained every step of the way. I was able to choose some music that I liked which helped more than I realised it would. They were gentle with me when using equipment and gave me advice and praise as the procedure was happening which gave me much needed courage to cope with the tooth extraction I was having. I did not feel rushed and they regularly asked if I was okay, if I could feel any pain etc. there was genuinely nothing I felt the team could have done better.

The doctor was efficient and I felt he did a very good job. He also had one of the best bedside manners that I have encountered with a doctor kindly telling me that I was doing really well, I’m nearly finished etc while performing the procedure, which no doctor has ever done during a procedure for me. It made all the difference.

Julie was knowledgeable when giving me aftercare advice and tailored it well to me specifically bearing in mind the information I had told her during the appointment such as I had children etc. After the procedure it was explained when I would be seen next and was told who to contact if any unwanted symptoms occurred - which were also described to me.

Thank you Mark, Frankee and Julie for making an unpleasant procedure so much more bearable and having a positive impact on my life - keep on doing what you’re doing because you’re great at the public service you provide. I must add that on my way out the receptionist also did everything she could to help me arrange a follow up appointment and finished with kind words thanking me for understanding and giving me a friendly smile goodbye. Thank goodness for the Nhs and it’s staff. I feel very fortunate!
