"Lack of compassion in A & E"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Accident and emergency

(as a relative),

My wife fell and injured her face, hand and elbow on a ferry on the morning. On returning home in a great deal of pain she refused to attend hospital because she knew it would be very busy. After 24 hours she was persuaded to attend.

Reception, triage nurses, junior doctors were all exemplary but when attended by the senior doctor that afternoon she was subjected to a rough and very painful examination.  There was no compassion and with little regard to the discomfort she was in. In my opinion the reason became clear when they suggested to her that she had had too many spritzers - this to a  woman in her seventies who had been in extreme pain for more than 24 hrs. She was extremely upset by this as she drinks very little alcohol .

We look forward to a swift response, preferably by a human on the phone not an impersonal e-mail.

Dear Relative,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. I hope your wife is doing better now. I am really sorry to hear about what she had to go through, even more so since she was already in a lot of stress at that time.
