"Our visit to the aural care clinic"

About: West Cornwall Hospital (Penzance) / Ear, Nose and Throat

(as a service user),

I took my husband to the aural care clinic as he needs his ears cleaned regularly. He is elderly and needs aids in both ears and is registered blind so this service is very important to both of us. Due to sickness, both in staff and ourselves, he wasn't able to see anyone for over five months and until then he had been having appointments every six weeks.

We went three weeks ago and the nurse was fabulous as usual but unfortunately couldn't clear one of his ears so she gave us another appointment two weeks later and told us to continue with the drops as per usual.  We returned last week and still the wax couldn't be cleared. We now have to wait until the end of August for another appointment due to how busy the clinic is and unfortunately now one of his hearing aids isn't working so the next month is going to be extremely difficult.

Dear Micawber,

I am so sorry to read that you are having difficulties accessing the Aural Care service for your husband. I have spoken to Karen in the Aural Care team, who has said they will be able to provide an earlier appointment for your husband if you are happy to travel to Treliske for this.

Karen has asked that you giver her a call on 01872 253838 to resolve this issue for you and your husband.

If, once you have spoken to Karen, you are still unhappy with this, please get in touch with our Patient Experience Team by emailing rcht.patientexperience@nhs.net or by calling 01872 252793 and we will help you resolve your complaint.

Kind regards

Laura

Update posted by Micawber (a service user)

I rang 01872 253838 but the automated message just said to ring the Booking Line. I rang them and spoke to Dee who was very helpful and was able to book us a cancellation appointment for tomorrow afternoon at Treliske. We are retaining the original appointment for as that will put us back on the usual schedule of ear cleans every six weeks.

Thank you so much for your help, as one of his hearing aids is now broken and has been returned to Treliske in the post he really can't hear anything so we are very grateful for the appointment!
