"Parking problems for outpatient appointment"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Outpatients Department

(as a relative),

I took my 88 year old mother for an outpatient appointment at Hairmyres in June.  The set down area was blocked by six cars,  two of which had drivers in waiting...three patient transfer ambulances, two of which were empty.

My mother,  with understandable mobility issues due to her age, had difficulty getting out of my car and threading her way through all these "parked" (more appropriately abandoned) vehicles to access the hospital entrance.

I had then to reverse to get out of the turning circle, as had two taxis and a minibus to allow me to get out.

Surely this is captured on CCTV and the hospital can clear?

Dear Artic Fos

Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns. I am sorry to hear of the difficulties that you had when attending an appointment with your mother. I have passed your comments to our security and property services team and have asked for a review of this area and prompt actions in terms of live CCTV footage.

As you say, this is a set down area and I would not expect to see vehicles parked or indeed abandoned for significant periods of time.

My sincere apologies to you and your mother for the inconvenience that has been caused to you both.

Thank you again for raising this. I hope that you will extend my apologies to your mothe.

Kind Regards

Lise

Lise.

Many thanks.

The day in question was Monday 13th June. Around 1:30/2pm.

I appreciate parking is a problem as almost certainly persons use the hospital carpark for Hairmyres railway station which has a knock on effect for staff and visitors.

This does not excuse people, including me, who have dropped off someone to sit in the car in the way of others! Leave the area, go around the block or sit for 20 mins somewhere else!

Last time I was there, some time ago, there was a big sports car parked in the same set down/pick up area using a blue badge.

The driver: the owner of the blue badge one has to assume - often disabilities are not visible - strolled out of the main reception into his car, started up, put his sports car roof down to enjoy the sun, then and only then did he drive off.

Although in both these occasions one could be forgiven in concluding that the use of the blue badge to park where he did was inappropriate.

I'm not wishing to appear insensitive or a "do good-er" as I too make mistakes and often do things which may upset others, but I do wish persons would CONSIDER for others as its this quality which has hemorrhaged quite clearly.
