"Professionalism of staff for my MH issues"

About: Daisy Hill Hospital / Elective Overnight Stay Centre/Gynaecology Ward

(as the patient),

I have PTSD, because of burns from a house fire which I have lived with for years. I was recently told by my Dr I was to have 2 cists removed which meant having to go to hospital and maybe some over night stays. I was beside myself, in the past I had reacted badly to being in hospital and care staff, I was so worried.

Upon arrival at the Day Ward I informed the staff I had bad PTSD and was sorry in advance for any odd/bad behaviour. The nurse simply smiled welcomed me & showed me to my room. Nurses Deirdre and Alison set about preparing me for surgery. They spoke to me politely (which helps when u have mental health issues), they were so unbelievably nice and understanding, helping build trust, making me feel safe. As I waiting for my surgery Deirdre checked in with me multiple times, chatting, helping me relax and answering all and any questions I had about the process. Both Deirdre and Alison are: Professional, nurturing, kind & efficient. Exactly what is needed when you are frightened and going under the knife. They are a credit to Daisy Hill Hospital and the amazing unseen work done there, they need paid more and to train others. These are the people on the ground in touch with clients needs.

My surgeon Dr Sharma is a fantastic gyne surgeon he treated me with respect and dignity from start to finish, even filling in for things my gp had not done for me regarding the process. He took into account my PTSD, how I felt about my body as a woman with more scarring and how he could help minimise some of the trauma of the necessary surgery. Unlike any other consultant I have ever met he was personable, kind, polite, kept true to his word and even called as promised on ever occasion, even after 5.30pm. I have had surgery 3 times before and I have been ignored, dismissed or forgotten, even laughed at, and I could never access to them when needed. Where as Dr Sharma has been there at every turn. Explaining everything in detail and above all listening to me.

I can't stress how important all the professionals behaviours towards me was, it's so difficult to describe but it's in their way of being, they are what help means. I am so very grateful to have Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry and can't imagine why anyone would ever think it's a good idea to close it down! The staff in the Day Elective Ward were fantastic, working their butts off non-stop. A special thanks to Deirdre, Alison, Bernie, Siobhan, Laura and the 2 very quiet night nurses who looked after me.

Its experiences like this that can help someone with PTSD have one more reason not be afraid to get help, or feel ashamed. These people are an absolute credit to the health service and to close the building they work in would be a great lose to the town, community and surrounding areas. You cannot find staff like this anywhere.
