"A precious gift for us as a family"

About: Causeway / Community Specialist Palliative Care Team District Nursing / District Nursing - Moyle

(as a service user),

In Sept 2021 my Mum was diagnosed with bile duct cancer and it was agreed she was not well enough for cancer treatment. She came home from hospital and we were told she had a few weeks to live. A care package was put in place, we were allocated a hospice team and the Moyle District Nurses were with us the whole journey.

I cannot praise the Moyle District nurses, Olivia, Georgia, Margaret and Laura, highly enough. They were a reassuring smiling face when we needed help and advice. They made sure Mum was monitored at all times and would ensure she had any medication or equipment she required. They liaised with the hospice nurses and the doctor's surgery when needed. When she was having problems with her bowels they came every day until the issue was resolved. They gave excellent care to both Mum and the rest of the family.

The Hospice Nurses - Tim and Debbie were a fantastic support to the whole family. They explained everything to Mum and what we as a family could expect. They made sure Dad, who has early stages of dementia, understood what was happening so he was prepared. They either called in person or telephoned at least once a week. They were kind and gentle with Mum and answered any questions she had to make sure she remained calm.

The care team from the Northern Trust - our main carers being - Anna and Marcheta have been superb and nothing was too much trouble. They were very caring and cheered Mum up every day. They looked after Mum until we required a double team from Marie Curie over Mum's last two weeks.

The Marie Curie Carers came in for the last two weeks of Mum's life and ensured she was able to stay at home to die - a precious gift for us as a family.

As a family we could not have had Mum at home until she died with out all the excellent support and help we had from everyone.

We were lucky to have Mum for 6 months and not just a few weeks and the care she received was a big part of this

Dear Dawnppp

My name is Marion Orr and I'm the District Nursing Coach in the Northern Health and Social Care Trust. I work alongside the District Nurses and their teams to ensure that a high quality of care is provided and that the experience of the patient, carer and family is a positive one.

Thank-you so much for taking the time to provide such lovely feedback to all the different teams involved in your Mum's care. I was very touched that your Mum was able to spend the last number of months of her life in her own home, surrounded by those she loved and that your Dad felt part of this care.

I know the majority of the nurses mentioned and I've passed on this feedback to them. I'm also planning to forward your feedback on to the Hospice Specialist team, the Marie Curie service and the domiciliary team.

It is really rewarding and motivating for the nurses and domiciliary care workers to know that they were a crucial part of your Mum's care at this difficult and emotional time.

I would also like to express my sincere sympathy to you and your family.

Thank-you so much

Marion
