"This service was an absolute life line"

About: Adult Mental Health Services / Perinatal Mental Health Team Maternity care (wards 68, 72 &73) / Maternity Day Care Maternity care (wards 68, 72 &73) / Maternity Out Patient Department The Princess Royal Maternity Unit / Maternity Outpatients

(as the patient),

I recently accessed the services from the Perinatal Mental Health/Maternal & Neonatal Psychological Interventions Team at Glasgow Royal Maternity.

My reason for this was following the birth of my baby boy which was a very anxious pregnancy, although the pregnancy was perfect medically, I was terrified I was going to lose the pregnancy as I did a previous.

I lost twins in 2020, one twin had passed away at 8 weeks and the other twin was found to have a cystic hygroma which we later discovered was because the twin had Edward's syndrome.

After my baby boy was born in 2021 the anniversary of the twins arrived which I didn't quite know how to deal with apart from ignore as I had my perfect baby to look after.

The emotions and challenges of being a new mum became overwhelming as well as not properly dealing with the loss of the twins.

I was offered psychological services after a challenging birth and I decided to contact them. I regret not contacting them during my pregnancy but thought it was silly because everything was progressing so well.

Lynne the specialist midwife got in contact with me a few days after my initial contact. I told her my story.

Lynne is the most loveliest and kindest person you could ever meet (virtually!). She helped me with many things I was struggling with and she gave me strategies to help cope.

She taught me to have more resilience and I cant thank her enough for this.

This service was an absolute life line and I'm shocked to find out it is only a very new service. I know of many women who have suffered loss and I know the feeling of losing babies, leaving the hospital and being expected to just get on with things with no idea of where to turn.

No one checks up on you after you leave the hospital after the loss of a baby and this was hard. I have now just had my final session with Lynne and I will miss our wee chats!

She is one in a million and I'm sad that I never got to meet her properly.

If there is anything that could come from my positive feedback on this service is to ensure that it can continue to help other women. Thank you.

Dear yafnoslocin

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience of the care you received from Lynne as part of the Maternity and Neonatal Psychological Interventions team.

Lynne will be delighted to know that she helped you through such an emotional time and I will share your kind words with her.

The specialist midwives are fairly new to the psychology team and it is great to know that they are making a difference to women and families who experience psychological issues during and after pregnancy and birth.

May I take this opportunity to wish you and your family well for the future.

Best Wishes

Elaine Drennan
