I was an emergency inpatient at w108 in Aberdeen Royal infirmary. While I was there, two different agency staff members made mistakes. First one gave me a tablet I later found out was Dioralyte (dispersible) ie. meant to be put in fluid for liquid loss, it literally did the opposite effect of what was intended and they saw nothing wrong with that.My main concern was the second staff member who I notified that I thought I may have been given a wrong tablet got extremely defensive said I was wrong and basically called me a liar, even tho I explained the medical team said the one I got wasn’t listed. Later on another staff member went to get my obs but realized I wouldn’t need them as was technically discharged already. The agency staff member enters not long after trying to do same and I explain what previous nurse said and there wasn’t really any need, yet again gets defensive starts arguing with me. I asked if I’d done something wrong as I didn't feel that they were being very professional, but they ignored me and walked away.
I was then at nurses desk as they are trying to see firstly where I’m going and where my notes have gone . The same staff member refused to help other nurses with any info and walked off again. The first one that dispensed the meds was then asked what tablet I got and the regular 108 nurse witnessed them say it was dioralyte, and asked why it wasn’t given in a fluid form to which they replied that they couldn't find a cup.
I said I’d like them present to be witness to the fact I wasn’t lying about the tablet. This staff member didn’t just treat me badly, but I felt they treated nearly all the other regular nurses badly also. I’ve often been an inpatient most my life and I feel the way this person treated me was totally unacceptable. This can’t keep happening. I was an emergency and my wife and children had also been admitted to hospital. This was the last thing our family needed.
