"Unnecessary paperwork"

About: Western General Hospital / General Medicine

(as a service user),

I had to spend a few hours at the Western General hospital to try and diagnose my issue. This involved tests and a scan and of course waiting for results.

First nurse I saw was having to fill in what seems reams of paperwork, I had taken up copies of recent medical issues given to me by my GP and promptly copied at home, I say recent as the list did cover some years and this nurse was having to copy salient points into some paperwork I mentioned that we are in the 21st century and all this should be accessed via PC to which the reply was that it can be, but it was still necessary to fill out a particular document which would probably never be read by anybody.

Spending quite some time waiting for results gave me the opportunity to observe the amount of paperwork the staff were having to do, which was quite shocking, not the best use of their time or skills I think.

Cannot fault the medical staff for their skills, empathy, humour and professionalism though what a pity NHS Lothian has such poor management.
