Family member drove me the 13 miles to NDDH A&E where I was promptly seen at reception. I took a seat in the waiting room and was seen by a triage doctor after about 15 mins. Given the mechanism of injury - large shod horse fly kicking me to the side of my chest I had a chest X-ray and moved to a side room. The staff were very attentive and pain relief given. There was a delay in getting a CT scan but after being chased I had the scan.
The doctor confirmed numerous rib fractures and that some were displaced puncturing my lung. The doctor was unable to speak directly with the thoracic specialist in Derriford but emailed all the details as it was shift change over (6pm). After a wait Derriford replied that I required surgery and would be transferred to Plymouth. I remained in a side cubicle until a bed was found and I could be admitted to NDDH for the night.
The staff in A&E were excellent and made me as comfortable as possible. Appropriate scans and consultation was done for a clear treatment plan. I was assured and felt that the staff were doing all they could.
I was admitted onto the ward where again staff were attentive and made me as comfortable to possible. The ward was full but I felt I could ask for assistance if I required it. Appropriate pain relief was given. Bed was comfortable and food ok.
