"Breastfeeding support"

About: County Community Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

When my son was born he was quickly diagnosed with a tongue tie. Lana  made sure I was provided with a pump for short term pumping and bottle feeding. Once his tongue tie had been reversed, I still suffered with pain. Lana then spent a couple of hours patiently helping my son and myself relearn to latch properly. Her support in house and also in the community at her group was vital. Normalising the difficulties in breastfeeding was so helpful. I have friends in other areas of Scotland who haven't been offered such level of care and support. Without it, my breastfeeding journey wouldn't have been so successful.

Dear Gemma19,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story and congratulations on the birth of your wee boy.

As you mention tongue tie can be very complicated if causing feeding problems and I am glad you received the support from Lana, a member of our infant feeding team. Recognising an early problem and ensuring support is put in place, such as keeping up breast milk supply through pumping, when direct breastfeeding is not possible,is fundamental in supporting a return to breastfeeding. I am delighted to read that you received this support prior to your tongue tie appointment, but also the support that you then received post snip to support a return to breastfeeding. It is this crucial breastfeeding support that can make all the difference and you desribe this so well.

It is also great to read how you received support at groups as well as in your house and I will pass your story on to Lana who will be delighted to read that her support helped your breastfeeding journey.

Kind regards

Karen Mackay
