"Disgusting A&E service."

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Accident & emergency

(as a service user),

In alignment with the disappointing Forth Valley NHS experience I have had to date (see my previous posts which have not been answered to in any reasonable/acceptable way), I was instructed by NHS 24 to take my  child to A&E at Forth Valley Hospital last night. I was advised a file would be made available and my child would be seen as there was a concern about whether the symptoms could indicate meningitis.

After hours of waiting in a horrible, dirty waiting room, with a child who was visibly unwell and unable to even sit, I had to take the decision to take my child back home. I was disgusted to see that other cases which appeared to be much less serious were being prioritised over a visibly unwell child. I also had not chosen to attend A&E, but rather I have been instructed by NHS24, however this made no difference.

The care by NHS Forth Valley is considerably sub standard most of the time.  However when it comes to children, I find the the health service in this region to be disgusting and completely unacceptable. I would be interested in receiving a publicly-visible reply to this post to explain NHS FV's rationale in relation to children's care. I am sure many other website users would also be interested to hear why other people who appear to have much less serious health issues are prioritised over a sick child.

Dear MFLGold2021

Thank you for taking the time to get in touch to tell us of your experience when attending our Emergency Department. I really am sorry that your experience was not better one, our staff work hard to provide the highest possible standard of care, and this has not been the case for you and your child. This must have been very upsetting and distressing for you and your child.

Can I please ask you to get in touch with me, I would like to look further into your feedback and also discuss with you any support your may need for your unwell child. For me to this I need a little more information, you can contact me on pauline.donnelly@nhs.scot or you can contact me on 07814 290508.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kindest regards

Pauline

Update posted by MFLGold2021 (a service user)

My post above was badly edited and I am complaining about the fact that people who appeared to be drug addicts were prioritised. As I can see you are reluctant to post any information publicly, I have contacted you on your email address.

Dear MFLGold2021

My name is Sarah and I am one of the senior moderators at Care Opinion. Thank you for using Care Opinion, I hope your child is feeling better.

I am replying to your comments about the editing of your story. I wanted clarify that Care Opinion (careopinion.org.uk) is independent of NHS Forth Valley and it was our decision to moderate your comments to remove details around the potential health conditions of other people in the Emergency Department.

We do this to remove identifying details about others not related to the story teller. These individuals my not want details about themselves online. We are also not able to verify the health conditions of others referenced in stories. However we wanted to make sure that your point around prioritisation of patients in ED was still understood and that we were still able to publish your experiences for everyone to read.

I am sorry we did not moderate your story in a way that you were happy with. I hope you can understand our reasons for this. I understand a colleague of mine offered to edit your comments and we are happy to look at any suggestions you have. You can reply to that email directly.

I hope this explanation is helpful.

Wishing you and your family all the best,

Sarah

Dear MFLGold2021

I appreciate you getting in touch with me following my response, I understand that a member of our Medical Team has been in contact with you to discuss your feedback and any concerns you may continue to have about your child's health, I do hope you found this conversation to be helpful.

You made mention in your feedback that the standard of cleanliness of the waiting areas was not of a good standard, I would like to assure you I have shared this with the appropriate team that deal with this, they will be very disappointed to hear this, we have a very hard working and dedicated team of domestic staff who work hard to ensure we meet our cleaning standards.

I hope your child feels better soon.

Kindest regards

Pauline
