"Excellent care and staff"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Ophthalmology

(as the patient),

Just to say that I thought that everything they have done for me has been excellent. I recently came out of hospital but didn’t manage to book an appointment with the clinic at that time. I didn’t feel up to calling them immediately but when I did, they went out of their way to get me an appointment within a few days. They are very professional and well organised.

I am a regular patient here and I cannot fault the service, my results were given to me there and then and everything explained to me.

The only thing I think that would make it better is an explanation of jargon and technical words and abbreviations in the letter I received. This was explained to me in the appointment, but I cannot remember it all. Perhaps something at the bottom of the letter to explain, I feel that if I understood better I would be able to look after myself better.

Dear dracoeq93,

Thank you for taking the time to get in touch with Care Opinion and letting the eye department know about your positive experience in attending with us. Your comments about our helpful and organised team is good to hear.

With regard to your feedback about jargon, technical words and abbreviations in your letter: ophthalmology (eye department) has a vast number of terms and abbreviations which our eye doctors, who write to your general practitioner, use to explain eye conditions. The eye doctor will, as you have already kindly mentioned, explains things to you at your appointment, so the follow up letter is just a summary of what was discussed and your management plan (I.e. next steps). Every patient's diagnosis, symptoms and medication/treatment is different, and so adding jargon explanations at the end of each clinic letter is not something our department currently does. I will however mention your feedback to our Lead Clinician, as to whether there is anything that could be done in the future.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to get in touch.
