"Not all heroes wear capes"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Blossom Ward (Paediatrics) Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick children / Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

(as a parent/guardian),

My child was admitted to Picu on three separate occasions, including twice during a 4 month stay in the hospital.

The last admission as an outpatient was in November with bronchiolitis. They were transferred from the Blossom hospital in Craigavon and sedated and put on a ventilator before being transferred back to the Blossom nearly a week later.

The team in Picu have always been amazing, from the crash team who provided transfer, the staff throughout our stays.  They went above and beyond for our family. Each nurse/doctor did everything to ensure my child was always comfortable and that we were supported too. The team is made up of outstanding nurses and doctors that could not do more than they already are doing.  Not all heroes wear capes. They wear tunics & overalls.

Picu environment can be daunting for any parent so having that bond with the team makes any stay a little less stressful.

We always had full trust in the Picu!

Forever grateful for the care provided.

Hi Brenda,

Thanks for taking the time to provide feedback, I can only imagine how worrying this time has been for you with several PICU admissions but thankfully PICU is an invaluable resource and the staff are always available for help and advice when needed from ourselves in Blossom - PICU will also receive your feedback and I'm sure they will be delighted to hear how thankful you are to the team.

I hope you and your family are well and would like to wish you a very happy new year.

Best Wishes

Stephanie McCarragher

Hi @Brenda21

Thank you for taking the time to feedback your recent experiences with us in RBHSC and in particular PICU.

Apologies for only responding to you now and I have passed on your compliments to them and they are extremely thankful for your very kind words.

It is difficult trying to balance the care for the child with the needs for the family as a unit and PICU is definitely one place that try to get the balance right because it is such a worrying situation to be in and, as you say, it can be a very daunting environment for parents to be faced with.

I can only imagine how this must have been an extremely traumatic and scary time for you and your family, and more so recently with the current restrictions placed upon us in response to the pandemic and surge of winter viruses, so thank you again for taking the time to feedback.

I hope things continue to improve and the road to recovery is not too long!
