"Step by step instructions would really help"

About: Community Services / Bladder & Bowel Care North Devon District Hospital / Urology

(as a service user),

I have been getting help from the urology department in Barnstaple with a urinary issue.  The prescribed treatment is quite difficult to self administer but Lucy who did the first treatment showed me what to do - she said to get in touch if I had difficulty however - she was lovely.  I tried the second treatment myself but the medication just went everywhere and the third time I just couldn't do it again.

I rang Lucy and and she said she could help me that afternoon.  The instructions for administering the medication are very long and contain a lot of text.  I mentioned to Lucy that it would be so much easier if there were diagrams or step by step pictures which are easier to follow when doing something complicated.  She thought it was a good idea and suggested I use Care Opinion to make my suggestion.

Dear pelicanhf73

Many thanks for leaving your constructive feedback. It is always good when patients take the time and trouble to feedback to us so that we can try and improve the service we provide to our patients. I am sorry that you found the instructions for administration to be very long and contain too much text. I am, however, pleased that you were able to contact Lucy and she was able to help you so quickly. I will make sure she sees your feedback. I will also pass on your feedback to Ansu Manoj, our Urology Clinical Nurse Specialist Team Leader, to see if she could adapt the instructions and perhaps add some step by step pictures to make the administration easier for patients to follow in the future.

Thank you again for leaving your feedback.

Kind regards

Paula

Dear Pelicanhf73,

Thank you for taking the time to give us feedback on your recent treatment visit to urology. I am sorry to hear that you had trouble with self administering the medication. After the teaching, we usually supervise self administration in hospital and I am not sure why that step was missed in your case. I am pleased that you have sought help from my colleagues. We appreciate your feedback suggestions and will take this into consideration to develop an easy/simple step by step guidance for people to follow.
