"Professional miscarriage care but unanswered questions"

About: The Princess Royal Maternity Unit / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

Recently I found out I was pregnant. At 6 weeks I started bleeding. I phoned the Early Pregnancy Assessment Service (EPAS) at the Princess Royal Maternity Unit, left a voicemail and was phoned back later that day. The midwife on the phone arranged a scan within 48 hours to confirm my suspicions.

When arriving at EPAS I was seen, scanned and had my bloods checked to exclude ectopic pregnancy within 15 minutes.

The staff were all professional and timely.

The issue I have is not with professionalism or efficiency but with lack of guidance and aftercare. I attended the appointment with several questions on what to do next/ comes next/ future pregnancy management, and had no opportunity to ask any questions. Even if I was discharged with an advice leaflet that answered the questions, that would have been helpful, but there was nothing.

The psychological impact of a miscarriage varies especially if you have been trying to conceive for a while, but again there was no discussion on any of these topics or even advice on the best resources to refer to.

I understand that the service is extremely busy but a thought to aftercare and the opportunity to ask questions would be far more beneficial to a woman who is miscarrying.

Dear Sun123,

Thanks you for taking the time to contact us especially through what is a very difficult time for you. Firstly I am sorry for your loss and appreciate from what you have demonstrated how further information and guidance could have helped you through this.

There is a leaflet which was developed for women experiencing pregnancy loss which explains differing symptoms alongside options available as these can vary. As you suggest sometimes conversations which take place during consultations through a stressful time cannot always be recalled and a leaflet con be useful to refer to when the time is right.

I am very sorry that this was not offered to you and I have discussed this with staff within the department to ensure that these are in stock and freely available and discussed with each women attending. We can of course send one on to you should you wish although I appreciate that now this may be of less relevance.

Thank you again for drawing this to our attention and wish you all the very best for 2022,

Kind regards,

Vicki Mazzoni

Lead Midwife
