My dad was admitted via the Acute Receiving Unit of the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital to Ward 55. He had been diagnosed with AF and was started on DOAC therapy. He was in a ward with five other gentlemen - all requiring help with going to toilet, walking etc. Ward 55 is part of the Geriatric Wards.
I have been visiting him every day, usually in the afternoons, avoiding lunch time. It is difficult to find a parking space, so I have, on a few occasions, elected to take the bus. However, with the new Omicron variant of Covid, I did not wish to travel on public transport more recently, hence my need for a parking space. I limited my visit to an hour, so others could get parking too. Also I felt my dad was quite tired as the ward was busy and he was up several times at night to the toilet, so he was quite exhausted. I could not thank the nursing staff et al for their kindness and support of my dad. I saw for myself how busy these HCSWs/nurses are and how demanding both the patients and their families can be. They are really stretched and could definitely do with more help.Sr Walker organised for my dad to go home today, and I cannot thank them enough for arranging this. He, himself was desperate to get back home, and my brother and sister were not allowed to see him in the hospital, but can now do so. Both siblings regularly do lateral flow tests, so that too is reassuring. It also means that my mum with whom he has been married for over 63 years can be reunited. It has been quite an upheaval and disturbing time for her to be separated from him. Thanks again, and I wish you all a Merry Christmas and hope that 2022 will be a better and a less demanding year for one and all. Thanks again.
